What are Doshas?

Doshas are the forces that govern our body and describe one’s physical characteristics and mental preferences. Ayurveda aims to keep Doshas in balance, as any imbalance disturbs the functioning of our body. In Ayurveda, Doshas contain all five elements of nature (space, air, fire, water, and earth), but each dosha is primarily composed of two.

Types of Doshas?

Doshas have been defined in three types – Vatta, Pitta & Kapha. Let’s understand these Doshas in brief.

Vatta: Vatta is responsible for the movement and thus often associated with wind or air element. This Dosha governs all the movements - heart pulsation, breathe flow, muscle contractions, movements of tissues, cellular mobility. It is also associated with creativity, flexibility and communication between mind and the nervous system.

Pitta: Pitta is linked to Fire element as it governs the energy of transformation. Pitta is responsible for intelligence, understanding, digestion, emotions and thoughts. It also governs metabolism, nutrition and body temperature.

Kapha: Kapha is associated with physiological form and structure. It governs all structure and lubrication in the mind and body. It controls weight growth, lubrication for the joints and lungs, and formation of all the seven tissues — nutritive fluids, blood, fat, muscles, bones, marrow and reproductive tissues.
